St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital Women’s Center First in Southeast Texas to be Accredited in Breast MRI Imaging by American College of Radiology

St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital (SLEH) Women’s Center is the first imaging site in Houston and Southeast Texas to receive accreditation in breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The ACR’s College of Radiology’s breast MRI accreditation program evaluates facilities on numerous criteria, including staff qualifications, equipment, quality control, quality assurance, MRI safety policies and image quality. SLEH Women’s Center is ACR accredited in all breast modalities offered, including mammography, breast ultrasound, breast ultrasound guided biopsy and fine needle aspiration (FNA), stereotactic breast biopsy and breast MRI.

In 2008, the Women’s Center became the first imaging site in the Houston area to receive the Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE) accreditation and recognition. The BICOE designation is awarded to breast imaging centers that achieve excellence by seeking and earning accreditation in all of the ACR’s voluntary breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program.

The Breast MRI accreditation is currently voluntary; however, it will be required beginning in 2012.
