St. Luke's Cancer Center Hosts First Cancer Research Summit

St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital (SLEH) hosted its first Cancer Research Summit on March 30, 2013, bringing together leaders of oncology research to share their latest advances as well as facilitating discussions for better integration and cooperation across affiliate institutions to enhance clinical trial accrual.  Luis H. Camacho, MD, MPH, Medical Director of the St. Luke’s Cancer Center, initiated and steered the event in an effort to ensure the Cancer Center is meeting commission on cancer accreditation standards for clinical research, and ultimately, carrying out St. Luke’s mission to provide high-quality, personalized cancer care to its patients through a full range of integrated, cutting-edge services while ministering to the whole patient—body, mind and spirit.  One of the highlights of this year’s summit was Dr. Ann Leen’s innovate talk, “T-cell Therapy for Pancreatic Cancer.”  Speakers also included, Matthew Anderson, MD, Ph.D.; Lauren Becnel, Ph.D.; Catherine Bollard, MD; Larry S. Carpenter, MD; Ebrahim S. Delpassand, MD; William E. Fisher, MD; Stephen Gottschalk, MD; Ertug Kovanci, MD; Martha Mims, MD, PhD; and Dr. Camacho(keynote).  A second summit is planned for spring 2014.
