New Formula Minimizes Recovery Time After Rhinoplasty Surgery

Using a new formula that combines a herbal remedy with a Swiss Therapy Chilled Gel Mask, Etai Funk, MD, FACS - a board-certified facial plastic surgeon and ear, nose and throat surgeon at St. Luke’s Medical Center (SLMC) - has experienced success in reducing patient recovery time from rhinoplasty surgery to just one week.

Dr. Funk begins the formula by having his rhinoplasty patients take the herbal remedy Arnica Montana prior to surgery, and have them continue taking it after surgery. The herbal remedy reduces the amount of swelling and bruising.

The second part of the formula occurs when Dr. Funk performs the bony portion of the surgery - which causes the most bruising - near the end of the procedure, so that the cold Swiss Therapy Gel Masks can be placed on the face immediately. Patients use the chilled gel masks, which are placed over their eyes for the first two days after surgery to prevent discomfort and decrease eyelid swelling and discoloration.

“By implementing these techniques, we have been able to reduce our patient recovery time to just one week after cosmetic nose surgery,” said Dr. Funk. “Patients can return to work and normal social activities after seven days, and regular exercise and workout routines after two weeks.”

As a facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Funk performs close to 100 rhinoplasty procedures a year.
