CHI St. Luke’s Health–Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center Is First Houston Hospital to Offer Virtually Scarless Robotic-Assisted Surgery for Advanced Gynecologic Conditions

CHI St. Luke’s Health–Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center (Baylor St. Luke’s) is now the first and only hospital in Houston to perform single-site surgery for advanced benign gynecologic procedures using the da Vinci® Si Surgical System. Using the most advanced technology available today, Baylor St. Luke’s can perform complex operations through one tiny incision in the navel and provide a virtually scar-less alternative to traditional open and laparoscopic surgery.

Baylor St. Luke’s is experienced in performing gynecologic procedures, such as sacrocolpopexy (pelvic organ prolapse repair), myomectomy (fibroid removal), and treatment of complex endometriosis disease. During the procedure, the surgeon sits at a console, viewing 3-D, high-definition images. The surgeon uses controls below the viewer to move the surgical instrument arms and camera. In real- time, the system translates the surgeon's hand, wrist and finger movements into the most precise movements possible using miniaturized instruments inside the patient.

“Our patients have more options than ever before for the treatment of gynecologic concerns, including the latest advances in minimally invasive and non-invasive surgery,” Xiaoming Guan, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, Fellowship Director of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery, Baylor College of Medicine, and Minimally Invasive Gynecologist at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center. “We’re uniquely positioned to provide these innovative approaches when necessary to avoid the need for surgery.”

Patients, who might otherwise have required open or traditional laparoscopic surgery can now opt to have a virtually scar-less procedure, resulting in shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, reduced risk of infection, and more cosmetically appealing results. “Robotic single-site surgery is the fastest, most effective way to provide surgical care for a gynecologic condition,” says Dr. Guan. “At Baylor St. Luke’s, we are dedicated to advancing the field of minimally invasive surgery through education and research, training the next generation of surgeons on the latest procedures and contributing to the development of new surgical techniques and technologies.”
