Services
The Center offers massage therapy, yoga therapy, personal pet visitation and acupuncture. To schedule any of the available services, ask your physician for an order of required service. Once a physician referral order is received, you will be contacted to discuss what services are the most appropriate for your condition, and to schedule a consultation with a licensed practitioner. The following services are provided to you at no cost.
Massage Therapy is the movement, such as stroking, kneading, percussion, compression and vibration, of soft tissue by hand or through a mechanical or electrical apparatus for the purpose of body massage. Its purpose is to induce relaxation, relieve stress, improve the circulation of blood and lymph, reduce pain and increase flexibility and general well-being.
Yoga Therapy is a system of exercises, which encompasses not only physical positions of the body, but also breathing techniques and relaxation strategies, used to achieve physical and mental control and an overall sense of well-being. There is strong evidence to support the use of yoga as a treatment for hypertension and daily levels of stress and anxiety in children and adults, altitude sickness, arthritis, asthma, cardiovascular disease, carpal tunnel syndrome, epilepsy, lung diseases, psychiatric conditions (including obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression) and substance abuse.
Personal Pet Visitation is a one-hour hospital visitation of a patient’s own dog or cat. Since 2010, Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center has offered this service through a partnership with PAWS (Pets Are Wonderful Support) Houston. A physician’s order is required for the visit and the family must provide proof of current vaccinations prior to the visit.
Acupuncture is a family of procedures that uses a variety of techniques with the insertion of tiny needles into specific body locations to stimulate anatomical locations on or in the skin to alleviate undesirable symptoms or conditions. Reasonable scientific evidence exists that supports acupuncture for several conditions, including various types of pain, nausea and vomiting.
To make an appointment for any of the Integrative Medicine Program Services, ask your physician for a consultation referral.
