St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital Ranked Among Nation’s Best Hospitals in Six Specialties Texas Heart® Institute at St. Luke’s #4 in Cardiology & Heart Surgery

In its annual survey of “America’s Best Hospitals,” U.S.News & World Report has ranked St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital (SLEH) among the elite healthcare institutions in the nation in six major areas of care. This includes the Texas Heart® Institute (THI) at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, listed in the top ten nationally in Cardiology & Heart Surgery for the 21st consecutive year. THI at SLEH maintained last year’s ranking as fourth in the nation.

“This recognition reflects nearly five decades dedicated to reducing the devastating toll of cardiovascular disease through innovative programs in research, education and improved patient care,” said James T. Willerson, MD, THI president and medical director. “The commitment of the physicians, nurses and staff members has helped Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s remain one of the nation’s best centers for cardiovascular care for more than 20 years.”

SLEH also placed among the nation’s leading hospitals in Diabetes & Endocrinology; Ear, Nose & Throat; Gastroenterology; Geriatrics; and Urology.

In addition to the national rankings, SLEH was listed as the number two hospital in the Houston metro ranking, and was designated high-performing in the areas of Cancer; Gynecology; Nephrology; Neurology & Neurosurgery; Orthopedics; and Pulmonology.

“For St. Luke’s, it’s about ensuring our patients receive compassionate, Faithful, Loving Care®,” said Margaret M. Van Bree, DrPH, senior vice president, St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System, and CEO, SLEH. “This honor acknowledges St. Luke’s world-renowned expertise for clinical excellence.”

St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital (SLWH) also received recognition from U.S.News & World Report. Listed among the top 20 hospitals in the Houston metro ranking, SLWH was also designated a high-performing hospital in Gynecology.

The annual national rankings, determined through criteria such as surgical volume, ratio of registered nurses to beds, number of medical and surgical discharges and recognition by peers, are designed to assist people in seeking the highest level of skill in diagnosing, treating or managing difficult medical conditions. U.S.News evaluated data from 4,825 hospitals, of which only 140 met the standard of being among the best in one or more specialties. The magazine evaluated data, engaged in physician surveys and considered patient outcomes, then recognized the 50 top-scoring hospitals in each category it reviewed.
